Shiela's story: One call took away the worry
After my diagnosis, I needed to reserve my energy for the important things—traveling with my husband and my daughter, attending her softball games, or just sitting across the table scrapbooking. That's me in a nutshell. I'm all about my family.
It's a challenge to say "No" without feeling guilty. But I've actually found asking for help to be a greater challenge.
Almost a year and a half ago, my co-pay was going up. In some way, I thought I had failed. If I couldn't make that payment and I couldn't get the medication, what was going to happen to me? When I talked to an MS LifeLines Financial Support Specialist, hearing her calming, soothing voice—that was a big deal to me.
I didn't have to fight the insurance company. Or make call after call. They did it. And then they called me back and said, "We have it all set up; you don't have to worry." It was wonderful.
I think it's important not to feel ashamed. When I talk to people, I say, if you need help, you call and get help. They'll do the hard work for you. All you have to do is call.
